I realize this unseasonably warm winter doesn’t make everyone automatically think of bone broth. But… why is everyone sick? I’m not! The weather has bounced back and forth and this would normally wreak havoc on my immune system. But I really believe that drinking one cup of hearty bone broth per day keeps me balanced and healthy.
I started to make bone broth after reading a book by actress Laura Prepon and nutritionist Elizabeth Troy called The Stash Plan. The diet in the book appealed to me because it seemed like the menus weren't restrictive. It was like, "Eat normal, but clean." The only thing that seemed weird to me was that they tell you to drink bone broth as they say "it heals you from the inside out." Wha??
After I made my first batch of homemade, organic bone broth, I loved the taste. They never tell you how much to drink or which kind – just supply you with the recipes (to which of course, I added my own twists). At first, I didn't really notice any of the benefits outside of the taste. I love to experiment in the kitchen and I love soup no matter what season it is – it's cold in the office in the summer!
But after doing some research I realized that bone broth does have truly healing properties – it's got so many essential nutrients and puts them in a form that is easy for the body to absorb. It aids digestion, eases joint discomfort, reduces cellulite and wards off wrinkles! The moment I realized I was sold, however, was when I caught a cold.... during travel. Usually when I catch a cold it lasts for at least a week, plus 2 weeks of residual bronchitis. Traveling exacerbates my sicknesses, especially when I get on a 2-hour plane ride followed up by a 12-hour road trip in a UHaul cab. I recovered from the cold, literally within a day of travel, and the illness itself didn't even suck that much!
I wish I took before/after pictures, to show you how bone broth keeps me young or whatever. But I can tell you how much it meant to me to be able to do the personal work I needed to do (between plane trip and UHaul) and get back to my office afterward feeling strong and healthy with no life interruptions. Broth is an immune system savior, and I encourage you to continue to visit and check the blog for supporting news articles and my personal stories of how delicious bone broth has changed my life.
